2 MLAs Say Housing Bill Discriminates Against Black Communities in Halifax Area
Two Black Nova Scotian MLAs, Suzy Hansen and Tony Ince, criticized Bill 329 in the Nova Scotia Legislature, alleging that it discriminates against historically Black communities in Halifax by granting excessive authority to the housing minister without requiring community consultations. They expressed concerns that this could underrmine previous community engagement efforts. Ince suggested taking more time with the bill to prevent unforeseen consequences. Housing Minister John Lohr defended the legislation, emphasizing its assessment of impact on equity-seeking communities and claiming he hadn’t heard similar concerns from others.
