BIPOC Nonprofit Organizations Need More From Philanthropy
Canada’s Foundation for Black Communities (FFBC) has asked Canadian funders to provide endowment support proportionate to the Black population of Canada so that assets can be held by Black communities themselves. In doing so, Black communities will have the ability to prioritize and allocate investments based on their understanding of their own needs. The reason for limited philanthropic support might be due to a power shift as FFBC’s request focuses on creating sustainable wealth under Black ownership. Philanthropy may be perpetuating a racial asset gap by not addressing inequalities in wealth.
