Statistics Canada has released a study based on the 2021 Census, which investigates the educational attainment and earnings of Canadian-born Black populations, focusing on three groups: African-origin, Caribbean-origin, and Canadian-origin individuals. Educational attainment varies significantly, with African-origin having the highest proportion (46%) of individuals with a bachelor’s degree or higher, followed by Caribbean-origin (27%) and Canadian-origin (16%). When considering age, all Black male groups earn less than non-racialized third-generation men, with Canadian-origin experiencing the largest earnings gap. Educational differences play a role in earnings disparities, particularly affecting African-origin Black individuals with higher education. Earnings gaps are also influenced by working in lower-level jobs and less full-time work.
