Greg Fergus Elected as First Black Speaker of the House of Commons

Greg Fergus has become Canada’s first Black Speaker of the House of Commons, following the resignation of Anthony Rota. Rota stepped down after controversy surrounding his honoring of a man with ties to a Nazi military unit during World War II. Fergus was elected through a secret ballot and emphasized his commitment to leading with respect and encouraging mutual respect among lawmakers. He acknowledged the scrutiny from Canadians and emphasized the importance of setting a positive example in Parliament. This historic appointment reflects a significant step towards greater diversity and inclusivity in Canadian politics. Greg is a long-time inspiring advocate for People of African Descent in Canada. He co-chaired the Parliamentary Black Caucus and was head of the Liberal Black Caucus for many years leading to government policies beneficial to Black communities.
