How Health Hubs are Helping Black Physicians in Ontario
The Black Physicians’ Association of Ontario (BPAO) has launched health hubs across Ontario to support Black medical students and physicians, particularly in regions with few Black mentors. These hubs, located in cities like Sudbury, Ottawa, and London, provide spaces for Black doctors to connect, share experiences, and address systemic barriers. Despite their success, BPAO Executive Director Chenai Kadungure highlights challenges in expanding the program, citing limited support from hospitals and universities. Research shows Black physicians often face racial biases and a lack of mentorship, impacting their career decisions. Dr. Jedrin Ngungu, who leads the London hub, emphasizes the hubs’ role in fostering a sense of community and addressing anti-Black racism in medicine. The BPAO calls for institutional partnerships and more Black mentors to sustain this vital initiative.
