Assistant professor Eternity Martis, alongside Carleton’s Nana aba Duncan, is leading Canada’s first research-led guide on reporting in Black communities. The project engages Black news consumers nationwide to develop a resource for journalists to report with dignity and care.
Using the Black emancipatory action research (BEAR) framework, the team has conducted focus groups in Toronto and Halifax, exploring media representation and its emotional impact. Future sessions in Montreal and Edmonton will further shape the guide.
Beyond the guide, the initiative aims to create workshops, podcasts, and conferences to foster lasting change in newsrooms. In February 2025, a seminar will present initial findings. This project is part of the Mary Ann Shadd Cary Centre’s broader effort for equity in journalism.
