As we approach the federal election on April 28, 2025, it’s crucial to recognize the power of your vote. Civic engagement is essential for ensuring that the voices of Black communities are heard and represented in policy decisions. Voting is a powerful tool to influence change and advocate for policies that address issues such as housing, justice reform, and economic opportunities.
Why Your Vote Matters: Policies have a profound impact on Black communities. For example, housing policies can determine access to affordable housing, justice reforms can address systemic racism within the criminal justice system and funding will continue to ensure sustainability of programs and services for Black communities. By voting, you have the power to shape these policies and drive meaningful progress.
Voter Turnout Among Black Canadians: Historically, voter turnout among Black Canadians has been lower compared to other groups. In the 2021 federal election, voter turnout among Black Canadians was estimated to be around 55%, compared to the national average of 76%. This highlights the importance of increasing voter participation to ensure our voices are heard.
Check Your Registration Status: It’s essential to ensure that you are registered to vote and that your information is up-to-date. You can check your registration status and update your information through Elections Canada.
Find Your Candidates: To find out who is running in your riding, visit Elections Canada and enter your postal code in the Voter Information Service box. Click on “Who are my candidates?” to see the list of confirmed candidates.
Together, we can make a difference. Your vote is your power. Will you use it this election?
