A Closer Look at Transformative Funding and Evaluation Relationships

This two-part learning series is designed to strengthen the foundational skills and practices in grant writing, program design, and evaluationThe learning will mirror and will be anchored within the context of funding and evaluation relationship between B3s/nonprofits and funders to improve the effectiveness of funding and evaluation relationships and produce better outcomes for communities served.


Part One – Grant Writing

This aims to strengthen the essential knowledge, skills, and practices necessary to prepare strong grant applications and establish transformative funding relationships with funders that produce better outcomes for communities served.


Part Two – Program Design and Evaluation

This builds on the grant writing and aims to strengthen the foundational knowledge, skills, and practices necessary to design and implement evaluation to tell the impact story and establish transformative evaluation relationships with funders.


After participating, you will be able to:

  • Access and use a grant writing resource, and program design, and evaluation guide to support ongoing learning
  • Build foundational knowledge, skills, and practices in grant writing, program design, and evaluation 
  • Build capacity to prepare strong grant or funding applications 
  • Build capacity to conduct evaluation and tell evaluation stories 
  • Improve organizational and adaptive capacity 
  • Establish and maintain transformative funding and evaluation relationships with funders

Yonatan Ghebray brings a wealth of experience working with B3s/nonprofits, evaluation practitioners, and fundersHe draws lessons from NABC’s partnerships with the Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiatives (SBCCI) and Healthy Communities Initiatives (HCI) and designing & implementing evaluation capacity building initiatives. He firmly believes that producing better outcomes for communities is a shared responsibility of B3s/nonprofits, evaluation practitioners, and funders.  

Frontline and middle management staff who are responsible for establishing and maintaining funding relationships; preparing grant applications; designing, implementing, and evaluating programs. 

This learning series combines interactive, experiential, and reflective learning to strengthen foundational knowledge, skills, and practices. A resource for grant writing and a guide for program design and evaluation, filled with concrete examples, will be made available to support the application of learning into organizational practice During and after the completion of the learning series, participants can request technical assistance and coaching in real-time to advance their work (e.g., grant writing, program evaluation)

Learning series will be hosted virtually (Zoom)Technical assistance and coaching will be offered virtually and in-person depending on location. 

Entry requirements

Participation in this series is open to:

  • B3 (Black-led, Black-focused, Black-serving) organizations and nonprofits across Canada

  • Organizations seeking to build foundational knowledge, skills, and practice in grant writing, program design, and program evaluation

  • Groups interested in strengthening their capacity to prepare successful grant/funding applications, design and implement programs, and evaluate their work

  • Organizations committed to improving their organizational and adaptive capacity, as well as their funding and evaluation relationships with funders

Participants should be willing to:

  • Take part in monthly interactive learning and reflection sessions

  • Participate in sites of practice where NABC, in collaboration with funders, provides direct support as part of a funding relationship

Series fees

Program Fees

  • Part One: $25 (choose individual sessions)

  • Full Program: $100 total (includes all 5 sessions)


Optional Add-On

  • Technical Assistance and Coaching – Fee varies according to specific needs
    Individualized technical assistance and coaching in real-time. This may include support in shaping a grant application, refining program design, or developing evaluation approaches. Please note: this service is advisory; we do not draft or complete materials on your behalf. For further details or to discuss your needs, please contact us.


Payment Information

Payment must be made in advance, before the program begins. Payment details and instructions will be provided once your application has been accepted.

Registration for Part One is currently open, and once it is complete, registration for Part Two will follow at a rate of $25 per session, or a discounted package of $85 total (includes all 4 sessions).

Series Time
Sessions will be scheduled from 1:00–3:00 p.m. or 2:00–4:00 p.m. (Eastern Time), depending on what works best for the majority of participants. The final schedule will be confirmed once registration is complete.
